We have been busy with our School –to- Community grant project that was funded by our national office from an anonymous donor. The goal of the STC program is to raise expectations for students who are in their transition years (14-21) and to increase the student’s self-advocacy skills. During the summer session at Gilmore Middle School, staff from The Arc presented a Self-Advocacy /Self Determination program to 12 high students. Over five sessions, staff engaged the students to identify their hopes and dreams, talk about their disabilities, identify strengths and set goals. The program will be offered to more students this fall in Racine and in Burlington.
The project also involves Arc staff working individually with students and their families. Six students are currently receiving one-on-one assistance including initial assessments which are required by the grant. Other services are provided, depending on the student’s need and can include: reviewing the student’s current IEP, assisting the student and family through the application process for eligible services and benefits and collaborating with agencies to ensure that best practices and services are adhered to. We are also working on self-advocacy skills and setting goals. Services will continue for the 6 students until the end of the year. The photos at the side show students in a mentoring and volunteering experience. Click here to learn more about Katy and Stephanie.
